Heute Morgen hab ich mir noch ein letztes mal Nashörner im Khama Rhino Sanctuary angeschaut und jetzt, ungefähr 5 Stunden später, sitze ich auf Lekhubu Island. Die Insel liegt nicht etwa in einem See, sondern mitten in einer der grössten Salzwüsten der Welt. Die ungefähr 1km lange und 20m hohe Felsinsel liegt an der Westseite der Sowa Pan (Nordosten von Botswana).
Die Gegend ist so unwirtlich und heiss, dass sich im afrikanischen Sommer nur etwa 5 Besucher pro Woche hierher „verirren“. Dabei hat der skurrile Campingplatz mit den vielen Baobabs und anderen grösseren Bäumen durchaus seinen Reiz.
Hierher zu gelangen ist genau so abenteuerlich, wie der Platz selbst. Eine richtige Strasse gibt es nämlich nicht nur Fahrspuren, die ungefähr alle 2 Kilometer verzweigen und kein Mensch weiss wohin sie führen. Zum Glück bin ich mit einem guten Navi ausgestattet, ansonsten hätte ich mich nicht getraut hierher zu fahren.

Today in the morning, I did a last Game Drive in Khama Rhino Sanctuary and now, apoximately 5 hours later, I sit on Lekhubu Island. This Island is not in a lake, it is in one of the bigest salt pans of the world. It’s situated on the western side of Sowa Pan (northeast of Botswana) and it is about 1km long and 20m high.
This area is so hot and barren, that during the african summer only 5 visitors per week driving here. But the surrealistic campsite here, with a lot of Baobabs and other big trees is still a sight you will never forget.
The drive trough the pan is adeventurous like the place itself. There is not realy a road, only tracks from other cars and they split about every 2nd kilometre, and nobody knows where these tracks are going to. Im lucky to have a good navigationsystem, otherwise I wouldn’t feel confident enough to drive to this wonderful place.
